A fun and easy game day snack board that uses pretzel rods as yard lines to create a football field effect. It comes together in under 20 minutes with store-bought ingredients and is completely customizable.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large wooden cutting board or baking sheet (at least 18×12 inches)
  • 45 cups green leaf lettuce or spinach leaves
  • 1215 pretzel rods (Rold Gold or Snyder’s recommended)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, cut into small cubes or triangles
  • 1 cup pepper jack cheese, cut into small cubes or triangles
  • 810 slices salami
  • 810 slices prosciutto
  • 1 cup cooked ham, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices (optional)
  • 1/2 cup black olives
  • 1/2 cup green olives stuffed with pimento
  • 1/4 cup pickles or cornichons
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, sliced into strips
  • Small bowl of honey mustard or ranch dressing
  • 1/2 cup almonds or cashews (optional)
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries or cherries (optional)
  • Small cheese ball or spreadable goat cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your base. Wash and thoroughly dry the lettuce or spinach leaves. Lay them out in a single layer across your board or baking sheet, covering the entire surface. This is your ‘grass.’ Make sure the leaves overlap slightly so no wood shows through.
  2. Mark the end zones. At one short end of the board, arrange the cheddar cheese cubes in a tight cluster. At the opposite end, do the same with the pepper jack cheese. These are your two end zones. Leave about 2 inches of space between the cheese and the edge of the board for a clean look.
  3. Lay down the yard lines. Take your pretzel rods and break them into pieces about 4-5 inches long. (You want them to span the width of the board, from sideline to sideline.) Place them across the board at even intervals—about every 3-4 inches. You should have 5-7 yard lines depending on the length of your board. Press them gently into the lettuce so they stay in place.
  4. Add the meats. Arrange the salami slices in a row between the first two yard lines. Fold or roll them for visual interest. Place the prosciutto ribbons in the next section. Scatter the ham cubes around the edges. Think of each section between yard lines as a ‘zone’ for a different ingredient.
  5. Fill in the sidelines. Around the perimeter of the board, place the olives, pickles, cherry tomatoes, and roasted red pepper strips. These act as the sidelines and add color contrast. Don’t overcrowd—leave some green showing.
  6. Add the finishing touches. Place the small bowl of dip somewhere near the center of the board, maybe around the 50-yard line. Scatter nuts and dried fruit in any empty spaces. If you’re using a cheese ball, shape it into a football and place it in the middle of the field.
  7. Check your work. Step back and look at your board. The pretzel yard lines should be the most prominent visual element. Adjust anything that feels cluttered. The goal is a clear, recognizable football field pattern.

Notes

Dry lettuce thoroughly to prevent soggy pretzels. Score pretzel rods lightly with a knife before snapping for cleaner breaks. Assemble no more than 30 minutes before serving to keep pretzels crunchy. Leftover pretzels can be crisped in a 300°F oven for 5 minutes.
