These football-shaped Rice Krispie treats are dense, buttery, and chewy, with a chocolate lacing that makes them perfect for game day. Quick and easy to make with simple ingredients, they’re a crowd-pleaser that disappears before halftime.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 (10-ounce) bag mini marshmallows
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening

Instructions

  1. Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving overhang. Lightly grease with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter until it starts to bubble, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the mini marshmallows and salt. Stir constantly until completely melted and smooth, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the crispy rice cereal and fold gently until evenly coated, being careful not to crush the cereal.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan. Use parchment paper or a greased spatula to press into an even layer without pressing too hard.
  7. Let cool at room temperature for 20-30 minutes until firm but slightly warm. For faster setting, refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  8. Lift the treats out using the parchment overhang. Place on a cutting board and use a football-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Re-press scraps if desired.
  9. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  10. Transfer melted chocolate to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Pipe a line down the center of each football, then add two short perpendicular lines on each side for laces. Let set for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best texture, use fresh marshmallows and don’t overheat the marshmallow mixture. Press the mixture gently to avoid dense treats. Keep the cookie cutter greased with butter for clean cuts. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Freeze for up to 2 months.
