Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package puff pastry sheets (thawed)
  • 8 to 10 standard-size hot dogs
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • Yellow mustard (optional, for eyes)
  • Flour (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Thaw puff pastry until cool but pliable (about 15 minutes at room temperature).
  3. Lightly flour your work surface. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry and gently roll it out to about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Cut the pastry into long strips about 1/2 inch wide using a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
  5. Wrap each hot dog with a pastry strip at a slight angle, leaving a small gap at the top for the ‘face’ and about 1 inch at the bottom uncovered. Overlap strips slightly and press ends to seal.
  6. Place wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Brush each mummy lightly with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the hot dogs are heated through.
  9. Let the mummies cool for about 2 minutes, then use a toothpick or knife tip to dab two small dots of mustard onto the exposed hot dog at the top for eyes.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold for best flakiness. Do not over-bake; pastry should be golden brown. Add mustard eyes after baking to prevent melting. For cheesy mummies, stuff a cheese strip into a slit in the hot dog before wrapping. For gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry and hot dogs.
