A creamy, cheesy spinach dip served in a toasted sourdough bread bowl with a festive spiderweb design on top. Perfect for Halloween parties, this easy appetizer comes together in about 30 minutes and is always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream, divided
  • 1 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1 pound)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream (for spiderweb)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for spiderweb)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the spinach: thaw frozen spinach (microwave for about 2 minutes), then squeeze out all excess water using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  3. Mix the dip base: In a large bowl, combine softened cream cheese, 1 cup minus 3 tablespoons sour cream, squeezed-dry spinach, mozzarella, Parmesan, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir until evenly combined.
  4. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a serrated knife, cut the top off the sourdough loaf (about 1 inch from the top). Set the top aside. Gently pull out the soft bread from the inside, leaving a 1-inch thick wall. Tear or cut the removed bread into bite-sized cubes.
  5. Brush the inside of the hollowed bread bowl and the bread cubes with melted butter.
  6. Spoon the spinach dip mixture into the hollowed bread bowl, spreading evenly. Do not overfill.
  7. Place the filled bread bowl and bread cubes on a baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the dip is hot and bubbly and the bread edges are golden brown.
  8. While the dip bakes, mix the reserved 3 tablespoons sour cream with 1 tablespoon milk in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or a small zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
  9. Once the dip comes out of the oven, let it cool for 2 minutes. Pipe a small circle of the sour cream mixture in the center, then pipe concentric circles around it, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Using a toothpick or knife, gently drag from the center outward through the circles to create a web pattern. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag.
  10. Serve immediately with the toasted bread cubes arranged around the bread bowl.

Notes

Squeeze spinach thoroughly to avoid watery dip. Use room temperature cream cheese for a smooth texture. Let dip cool slightly before adding spiderweb design to prevent sour cream from melting. For gluten-free, serve dip in a baking dish with gluten-free dippers.
